For many Africans, getting a U.S. visa may soon mean travelling to another country just to attend an embassy appointment.

Washington is planning to reduce its visa-processing locations across the continent from 50 to just 20 hubs, concentrating services in countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa. For students, business owners and travellers working with tight schedules and limited budgets, the extra cost and logistics could easily become part of the visa process itself.

The overhaul may make things easier for the U.S., but harder for many Africans simply trying to study, work or do business abroad.

Consequently, applicants living in countries stripped of local consular services must now make expensive cross-border trips to these selected hubs for interviews and biometrics.

While supporters argue this consolidation cuts costs and improves efficiency, critics warn the strategy will trigger longer wait times and heavy travel expenses for millions of African students, entrepreneurs, and business travelers. Read more…
