US buys record 53,290 tonnes of discounted Congo copper as China shipments fall

The United States imported a record 53,290 tonnes of refined copper from the Democratic Republic of Congo in July, accounting for 23.9% of total US copper imports.
This single monthly shipment surpassed America's total 2024 imports from Congo. US manufacturers increased purchases because Congolese copper quality improved and it sold at discounts between $550 and $800 per tonne compared to COMEX-approved brands. Meanwhile, China remains Congo's top copper customer despite a 4.3% drop in shipments during the first seven months of 2026, importing 95,778 tonnes from Congo in July.
