In today's global economy, how goods are made can matter as much as the goods themselves.

The United States is considering new tariffs on exports from eight African countries after a broad investigation into forced-labour compliance across global supply chains. For exporters, the challenge is no longer just making competitive products, but also meeting the growing list of standards that trading partners expect them to enforce.

If approved, the proposal would be another sign that trade policy is becoming as much about regulations and accountability as it is about goods and prices.

Egypt moves to turn Suez Canal into Africa’s next logistics powerhouse

Egypt is reviewing proposals to establish a global logistics distribution center within the Suez Canal Economic Zone. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly discussed the project during a high-level meeting in Cairo on Monday with investment, free zones, and maritime authority officials.

The initiative comes as countries across Africa compete to capture a larger share of global supply chains amid shifting trade patterns. The proposed hub aims to transform the zone from a simple transit point into a strategic center where international goods are stored, processed, and handled.

By expanding these logistics services, authorities plan to capture more value from the millions of tonnes of cargo passing through each year. This will allow Egypt to generate additional foreign exchange earnings and support port operations rather than relying primarily on canal transit fees. Read more…
