For years, one of the accused in a massive COVID-era fraud case remained out of reach. That changed this week after Somalia handed him over to US authorities following cooperation between both countries.

Federal authorities transferred Abdikerm Abdelahi Eidleh from Somalia to Minnesota to face 31 charges linked to the alleged diversion of funds from a COVID-era child nutrition programme.

Indicted in 2022, he was located in Somalia in June 2026 after nearly four years on the FBI's wanted list.

Prosecutors accuse him of recruiting fraudulent meal sites, operating fake sites, creating companies that submitted false invoices, and receiving bribes and kickbacks.

His return followed cooperation between U.S. and Somali authorities in what officials described as one of the largest pandemic-related fraud prosecutions in U.S. history. Read more…
