OPENING SIGNAL
Somalia unlocks $3b gold reserves held by 1 million women

Somalia's MyBank has launched a service allowing women to use verified gold jewellery as collateral for loans, expanding access to formal finance.

Approximately 1 million Somali women hold around 20 tonnes of gold valued at nearly $3 billion, mostly acquired as marriage gifts or personal savings. Currently, only a tenth of women in the nation can access formal financing due to a lack of conventional collateral, property ownership, or guarantors.

This initiative enables women to leverage their existing household gold wealth for financing without having to sell the jewellery outright.
