Sahel states agree to negotiate new deal with regional bloc

Nearly 21 months after Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger announced their exit from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) has agreed to negotiate a formal cooperation framework with the regional organization.

Following a ministerial meeting in Dakar, Senegalese Foreign Minister Cheikh Niang and Burkinabè Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré announced the creation of joint thematic working groups to structure technical agreements on cross-border trade, regional transit, and shared infrastructure.
