Egypt doubles down on French rafale jets in high-stakes defense expansion
|
|
Egypt sent a Request for Proposal to France for 24 additional Rafale fighter jets, potentially expanding its fleet to 78 aircraft as it looks to replace its aging F-16s.
Having previously ordered 24 jets in 2015 and 30 in 2021, Egypt remains Dassault Aviation's first foreign customer. The potential deal comes despite scrutiny following a May 2025 India-Pakistan conflict where a Rafale was reportedly shot down by a Chinese-made J-10C. Additionally, Cairo continues favoring the French jet even after recent joint military exercises with China, where Chinese J-16s trained directly alongside Egyptian Rafales.

Gold surges to $4,468 as global central banks accumulate reserves
Spot gold surged to $4,468 an ounce on September 4, driven by sustained global inflation hedging and emerging market central bank diversification away from dollar-denominated assets. For major African gold producers including Ghana, South Africa, Mali, and Burkina Faso, record bullion prices provide windfall royalty taxes and expanded export earnings. However, corporate treasury departments in import-reliant economies face secondary pressure as elevated commodity prices drive up global logistics costs.
THE AFRICA ANGLE: Resource-rich nations should channel record gold mining windfall revenues into sovereign wealth reserves and domestic infrastructure rather than short-term recurrent expenditure.
