Ethiopian Airlines suspended flights to the northern cities of Mekelle, Axum, and Shire following a security crisis in the Tigray region. Local sources reported that Tigrayan forces seized the regional capital's airport in Mekelle from federal police.
The suspension also reportedly affected flights to Lalibela in the neighboring Amhara region, threatening travel to its historic UNESCO World Heritage site. The flight disruptions follow escalating political tensions and the violation of the November 2022 peace agreement, with the Tigray People's Liberation Front recently joining an alliance with six other armed groups opposing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government.
