Zimbabwe's Cabinet has authorized the development of a $650 million floating solar power project on Lake Kariba to address severe domestic electricity shortages and stabilize grid generation.
The 600-megawatt floating plant aims to supplement depleted hydropower capacity and conserve dam water during peak daylight hours. The approval revives public scrutiny surrounding the stalled $132 million Gwanda solar project awarded in 2015 to Intratrek Zimbabwe, whose founder, Wicknell Chivayo, died in a helicopter crash in September 2026.

EU commits €25 million to curb Mediterranean migration from eastern Libya
Over 25,000 migrants crossed into Italy and Greece during the first six months of 2026, with departures increasingly shifting toward eastern Libya—a territory controlled by Russia-backed military commander Khalifa Haftar. In response, the European Union announced an additional €25 million funding commitment to establish a Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Benghazi and bolster border management operations.
