In outbreaks like Ebola, even a few recoveries can change the mood of an entire region.

Health officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo say five people, including several frontline medical workers, have now recovered from the virus as efforts to contain the latest outbreak begin to show signs of progress. Past Ebola outbreaks have proven that early detection, faster isolation and coordinated international support often make the difference between containment and a wider regional crisis.

For now, the recoveries offer a much-needed moment of relief in a fight that remains far from over, especially with no approved vaccine yet available for the current strain.
