12,000 tonnes of Congolese copper enters US strategic minerals reserve

Commodity trader Mercuria has delivered 12,000 tonnes of copper from the Democratic Republic of Congo into "Project Vault," the United States’ $12 billion strategic industrial minerals reserve.

The delivery marks the first physical integration of African critical minerals into Washington’s domestic inventory, designed to shield American manufacturers against supply chain disruptions and Chinese market dominance.

The shipment forms part of an overarching commitment by DRC state miner Gécamines to supply 100,000 tonnes of copper to US buyers in 2026, backed by a $10 billion loan framework from the US Export-Import Bank.
