King Mohammed VI orders territorial defense as 35-year UN Western Sahara mission ends

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has directed civilian and security leadership to enforce territorial integrity and protect residents across Western Sahara following the official expiration of the United Nations peacekeeping mandate.

The directive follows a diplomatic stalemate at the UN Security Council, where a Russian veto of a US-drafted resolution on October 31 terminated the 35-year mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO). During a high-level palace council with military commanders and cabinet ministers in Rabat, the monarch instructed the Interior Ministry to manage the liquidation and orderly withdrawal of approximately 200 UN personnel stationed in Laayoune.

While affirming Morocco's ongoing commitment to the established ceasefire and long-term regional development programs, Rabat is asserting sovereign control over the territory as international diplomacy shifts toward its proposed autonomy framework.

IMMIGRATION REFORM & LABOR MOBILITY
Lithuania shuts in-country permit path for African workers and students
Stricter European Union immigration frameworks have taken effect in Lithuania, barring third-country nationals entering on Schengen or temporary national visas from applying for employment- or undergraduate-study-based residence permits from within the country. The policy shift requires foreign professionals and admitted students to apply through external consular visa centres abroad before entry, reversing prior domestic conversion procedures.
THE AFRICA ANGLE: The restrictions hit applicants from Ghana particularly hard, as local visa centres handle family reunification and highly skilled categories but lack processing capacity for standard work permits, forcing recruiters to re-evaluate African talent pipelines.
