Dear Readers,
So, what’s the latest in Africa right now? Well, to begin with, some cities on the continent are now firmly on the radar of some of Africa’s most prominent investors and global superpowers.
Very recently, Moroccan billionaire Anas Sefrioui set aside $300 million for a mixed-use development project in Abidjan, the Ivory Coast’s primary commercial hub.
Meanwhile, over in the DRC’s North Kivu province, the U.S. just landed access to tantalum reserves, blending big business with diplomatic strategy and a peace deal.
Back in South Africa, wealth distribution is getting a new makeover. Rising incomes among Black households are reshaping the country’s wealth map more than 30 years after apartheid. The top-income brackets are no longer dominated by one group, but inequality is still very real, so there’s progress and perspective to keep in mind.
Then there’s France, quietly recalibrating its influence in the Sahel region of West Africa by renewing security ties with Algeria.
Across the board, whether it’s finance, real estate, or resources, Africa in the last 48 hours feels like a place where bold bets meet real opportunity.

Moroccan billionaire Anas Sefrioui commits $300 million to luxury mixed-use project in Abidjan
Anas Sefrioui
Moroccan property billionaire Anas Sefrioui is investing more than MAD 3 billion (about $300 million) in a historic mixed-use complex in Abidjan, marking one of his most substantial investments in Côte d'Ivoire's commercial city.
The project, developed by Addoha Group, will be set up in one of the city's most established business and residential zones, and will cover more than 150,000 square metres of usable space.
At the core of the development are four 20-story apartment towers called "Les Tours Éléphants," as well as contemporary office buildings and a large shopping mall. Beyond Côte d'Ivoire, Addoha has active activities in Senegal, Guinea, Gabon, and Cameroon, with a production pipeline of over 23,000 units and more than MAD 10 billion in secured income.
Why This Matters
This is noteworthy because a $300 million mixed-use construction is a confidence signal rather than just a real estate transaction.
By investing that kind of money in Abidjan, Anas Sefrioui and Addoha Group are essentially placing a wager that the city's business community, middle class, and urban expansion will all continue to develop.
It also denotes a change in strategy. Large-scale inexpensive housing in Morocco was Addoha's specialty, but this project highlights the continent's shift toward higher-margin, luxury urban developments.

🇳🇪 Niger secures $91 million IMF boost as AES states regain global financial recognition
Niger’s military-led government has secured fresh backing from the International Monetary Fund, unlocking roughly $91 million in new financing despite its political realignment and deepening role in the Alliance of Sahel States.
The approval follows completed reviews under the IMF’s Extended Credit Facility and Resilience and Sustainability Facility programs, with about $61 million earmarked for direct budget support and $30 million for climate resilience and long-term sustainability initiatives.
Despite shifting geopolitical alliances under General Abdourahamane Tiani, Niger remains financially integrated into the global system, bolstered in part by its strategic role as a major uranium producer in global energy supply chains.
🇺🇸 U.S. gains access to world’s richest tantalum deposit in DR Congo as mineral deal reshapes war, global tech supply chains
The United States has secured access to vast tantalum reserves in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, targeting strategic sites in Manono and the Rubaya mining area as part of a broader minerals partnership.
The deal is designed to reduce Western dependence on Chinese processing dominance while expanding formal mining investment in one of the world’s most resource-rich regions.
Beyond commercial strategy, the agreement is tied to Washington’s diplomatic push to ease tensions between DR Congo and Rwanda, where conflict in mineral-rich eastern provinces has long fueled instability.
🇿🇦 Growing black prosperity alters South Africa’s wealth demographics more than 30 years after apartheid
Higher salaries among Black South Africans have shifted the country's income structure more than 30 years after apartheid.
According to a new report by the University of Cape Town's Liberty Institute of Strategic Marketing, by 2024, 41% of both Black and White households will earn more than 75,000 rand per month, a significant shift from 2012, when White households dominated the upper-income group.
Despite this upward mobility, South Africa is still one of the world's most unequal economies. According to the 2026 World Inequality Report, the wealthiest 10% of earners account for 66% of national income, while the poorest half earn only 6%.

Geopolitics & Power
French President Emmanuel Macron shakes hand with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, at the presidential palace in Algiers, Algeria.
🇫🇷 France seeks return to AES space via renewed high-level security deal in North Africa
Following its expulsion from Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, France intends to recover a strategic footing in the Sahel by restoring high-level security connections with Algeria. The three juntas are now linked under the Alliance of Sahel States.
High-level meetings in Algiers between French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez and President Abdelmadjid Tebboune confirmed the reset, reinstating a security system that had stagnated during diplomatic tensions.
Algeria's shared borders with Mali and Niger position it as a crucial gateway to the Sahel, providing France with indirect access to information and counterterrorism coordination at a time when Russia and other global powers are strengthening their presence in Africa.
Business Implication
The business implication here would most likely be more favorable to Algeria. As Paris shifts from boots-on-the-ground to intelligence-led partnerships, Algeria becomes a geopolitical gateway to Mali and Niger.
That positioning could translate into increased French commercial diplomacy, financing deals, and joint ventures routed through Algiers.
Sectors likely to benefit include energy infrastructure, border logistics, security technology, and migration management systems.

Google announces "Pixel 10a" ahead of iPhone 17e
Google has announced the new Pixel 10a, which will be available for sale on March 5 at a basic price of $499. The phone retains the Tensor G4 chip from the flagship Pixel 9 series while adding a brighter 6.3-inch display.
Design is a big highlight: Google characterizes the dual-camera system as "perfectly flat," eliminating the visible camera hump found on many smartphones. The back configuration combines a 48MP wide and 13MP ultra-wide lens with Night Sight, which Google claims is the greatest camera under $500.
With durability advancements like Gorilla Glass 7i and IP68 protection, the Pixel 10a places itself solidly in the mid-range market, perhaps setting up another clash with Apple, which is slated to release a budget-friendly iPhone 17e shortly.
