African beverage tycoons invest millions to challenge Coca-Cola and PepsiCo

While American soft drink giants Coca-Cola and PepsiCo battle across the United States for multi-year restaurant contracts, a fierce and capital-intensive counter-offensive is unfolding across Africa.

Homegrown industrial tycoons are deploying hundreds of millions of dollars into modern bottling lines, localized supply chains, and aggressive distribution networks to undercut international price points and capture mass-market share.

In East Africa, Tanzanian billionaires Mohammed Dewji (MeTL Group) and Said Salim Bakhresa have committed a combined $550 million toward regional beverage factories, including MeTL's $50 million Mombasa facility and Azam's $500 million Mwandege plant doubling capacity to 300,000 cartons daily.

In West Africa, Nigeria’s Rite Foods invested over ₦30 billion ($22.3 million) to triple Bigi output, while Mamuda’s Pop Cola and Egypt’s V7 rapidly expand capacity to displace global carbonated drink staples.

US Justice Department Uncovers $200M Student-Aid Scam Linked to Kenyan Networks
The US Department of Justice announced initial indictments under "Operation Ghostbusters," charging five individuals for orchestrating a sophisticated syndicate using stolen American identities to fraudulently obtain federal student financial aid. Federal prosecutors outlined criminal cases across Virginia, Nebraska, and New Jersey, alleging that conspirators used the FAFSA system to enroll fictitious college students, siphon loan disbursements, and wire millions back to accounts in Kenya. Investigators have already seized over $750,000 in cryptocurrency linked to a Kenyan suspect and recommended the deactivation of 830,840 compromised student accounts holding nearly $130 million.

King Charles Lands in Guyana as African and Caribbean Nations Unite on Slavery Reparations
Britain’s King Charles III arrived in Guyana on a state visit confronting intensified demands from the 15-member Caribbean Community (CARICOM), alongside African governments including Ghana and Kenya, for formal apologies, colonial artefact returns, and financial reparations. While Guyana’s President Mohamed Irfaan Ali and Ghana’s President John Mahama urge structured debt cancellation and development finance to redress colonial atrocities, Buckingham Palace confirmed the monarch will engage in dialogue but will not issue a formal state apology, leaving sovereign financial claims to the British government.

Putin Discloses High-Level Coordination with Elon Musk at Russia-Africa Summit
Speaking at the Russia-Africa economic forum in Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin praised SpaceX founder Elon Musk as a "real genius" and disclosed ongoing operational contact between Moscow and US aerospace teams. Putin explained that technical coordination is required to ensure Russia’s domestic satellite internet network, Rassvet, does not interfere in orbit with SpaceX’s 13,000-satellite Starlink constellation. The high-level disclosures coincide with intense international scrutiny over satellite communications in conflict zones and recent service restrictions experienced by Ukraine's military.

US ends Mariana Islands visa-free route following African birth-tourism crackdown
The US Department of Homeland Security has suspended its Economic Vitality and Security Travel Authorisation Programme in the Northern Mariana Islands, revoking a visa-free travel route used by more than 3,000 Chinese visitors during the 2025 fiscal year. Effective October 30, the policy closure addresses national security concerns and curbs commercial birth-tourism schemes aimed at securing automatic American citizenship for newborn children.
THE AFRICA ANGLE: The Pacific travel suspension follows the US State Department's revocation of more than 100 visas across West and North Africa in June after dismantling intermediary syndicates that coached expectant mothers on obtaining US visas with forged documentation.
